Meet Chef Miguel Urrutia

beginnings of a chef

Miguel’s love for food started at a young age. By only 12 years old Miguel was working in his father’s small restaurant in Irapuato, Mexico. His responsibility at the restaurant started with washing dishes, but as his curiosity grew he started paying attention to how the dishes were prepped and cooked. At 16 years old Miguel moved on his own to the United States and began working at restaurants in Los Angeles where his knowledge for food grew.

Work Experience

Miguel's restaurant experience continued to grow and he now has over 25 years of experience in many well-known restaurants throughout the Twin Cities. Miguel's ventures in Minneapolis began by helping open the Rainforest Café in the Mall of America in 1994. He then went on to work at two of the most recognized restaurants in the Twin Cities; The Cheesecake Factory and Redstone, where he focused on high quality food while attaining high sales. Miguel later worked at the Chart House in Lakeville where he would regularly create individualized menus catering to groups as large as 800 people for weddings and special events. Miguel has spent the last 11 years working as the Executive Chef at Pittsburgh Blue in Maple Grove in which he helped open in 2007. 

Small Business Owner

Miguel's passion for cooking at work and home inspired him to create his own line of salsas, sauces, and chips that he began selling at the Prior Lake Farmer's Market in 2014. Miguel's loyal clientele aided in his business quickly expanding. Miguel is now the owner of the El Jefe food truck and the soon to be opened El Jefe Cocina & Bar in Minneapolis.
